In mid-May I joined BHC and PROSTEP at Siemens Realize LIVE in Las Vegas. Last year we explored the Codebeamer world at PTC LiveWorx in Boston. This year, Polarion and the SIEMENS PLM ecosystem were the focus.
My personal highlight: my talk “Leveraging Long Term Software Update Strategies”, in which I show how ALM (Application Lifecycle Management) helps keep software-driven products “fresh” over a longer period. It’s not trivial, but with the right methods and sensible use of ALM tools it is absolutely doable.
- The business model has to be set up to earn money from updates as well
- The product architecture has to be modularised and standardised so that as many product generations as possible can be served with the same software updates
- ALM tools that are sensibly integrated into the PLM landscape give you complete transparency across requirements, tests and dependencies, and therefore a high degree of automation.

Are PROSTEP and BHC building Mars rovers now?
The Mars rover was a constant draw at our booth, and in various forms came the question of whether PROSTEP is now developing spacecraft. No, of course we don’t build Mars rovers 😉, but we get people excited about technology, and the rover shows the seamless integration of numerous PLM tools using PROSTEP products such as OpenPDM or OpenCLM.
Beyond all the technology and engineering, it’s also simply great to come together in an international team of like-minded people. Occasions like this are enriching: you exchange ideas with colleagues from all over the world, learn, broaden your horizons, and also realize that elsewhere, too, we are “just” people and everyone is cooking with water.
The whole exhausting, jet-lagged week was more than worth it.
